Rudy Giuliani has extended his lead over his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Matched against other Republicans, Giuliani received 33 percent of the votes in the late-July survey, easily outdistancing unannounced candidate Fred Thompson with 20 percent. John McCain got 17 percent of the vote, and Mitt Romney, 11 percent.
Giuliani’s 13-point lead over Thompson was four percentage points better than in a late-June NBC/Wall Street Journal poll.
On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton increased her lead over second-place finisher Barack Obama to 21 percentage points, getting 43 percent of the votes compared to 22 percent for Obama. Her lead in the June poll was 14 percent.

According to the new poll, Clinton would defeat Giuliani in the general election, by a margin of 47 percent to 41 percent.
