Michael Deaver, 1 of President Reagan's closest advisers, has died of pancreatic cancer. He was 69.
A family statement says he died at his home in Bethesda, Maryland, earlier today.
As the chief choreographer behind Reagan's public events, Deaver protected the president's image and enhanced it with his flair for knowing the right settings, poses and camera angles. Deaver's expertise was both celebrated and scorned.
But his own image suffered a setback in 1987, when he was convicted of perjury stemming from statements to a congressional subcommittee and a federal grand jury investigating his lobbying activities. He blamed alcoholism for lapses in memory and judgment.
