Talk show host Don Imus is close to a financial settlement with CBS, the network that fired him in April.
The two sides have agreed to a CBS buyout of Imus’ contract, which had $40 million remaining when he was axed following disparaging on-air remarks about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team.
Imus has filed a lawsuit against CBS, seeking $120 million in damages, and sources told the New York Post that CBS will agree to the buyout to avoid costly and potentially ugly litigation.
The details of the settlement have been hammered out, but CBS is delaying making the deal official until it can lock up former football star Boomer Esiason to take over Imus’ old morning slot on WFAN in New York, the Post reports.

Meanwhile Imus is talking to several other media outlets, including Clear Channel Communications, about a return to the airwaves.
The prospect of Imus’ return got a major boost last week when Al Sharpton, who led the campaign to sack Imus following his Rutgers remarks, said he would not object to Imus returning to radio.
