Former Sen. Fred Thompson – a likely opponent of Rudy Giuliani for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination – met Thursday with a New York City firefighters’ union official seeking to torpedo Giuliani’s candidacy.
Thompson had breakfast with Uniformed Firefighters Association President Steve Cassidy a day after the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) released a 13-minute video critical of Giuliani’s actions as New York City mayor in connection with the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Firefighters argue that the Giuliani administration failed to provide adequate radios for first responders at the World Trade Center, and they are angry that Giuliani ordered a speed-up of rubble removal at Ground Zero, cutting back the size of the group searching for the remains of firefighters and others.
"I was impressed” by Thompson, Cassidy told the New York Post. "All the things I’d heard about him certainly seemed to be true.”

He said Thompson had requested the meeting, which former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato also attended.
Asked if he agrees with Cassidy and IAFF leaders’ views regarding Giuliani, Thompson said: "I do not know enough about those circumstances to even render an opinion.”
