Former CNN anchor Bernard Shaw is upset with what he sees in broadcast journalism, particularly what he’s viewing on CNN and Fox News Channel.
Shaw, a Chicago native, told that city's WTTW-Channel 11 that he’s "very disappointed” with the news product he sees in cable television.
"Unfortunately, Fox News is the ratings leader . . . on the cable side of the business, and what Fox puts on the air is not news," Shaw said. What Fox does, he said, is "commentary, personal analysis."
Shaw, who was one of the pioneers of the 24-hour cable news format with CNN, says his former employer is changing its style for ratings, but is sacrificing traditional news values.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports on Shaw's comments, which are not flattering to CNN. "I'm very, very disappointed with the way the news management at my favorite network has gone," Shaw said of CNN. "CNN continues to ape many of the on-air mannerisms of the Fox News Network, and I don't like that."
Shaw retired from CNN in 2001 after two decades with the network. He considers himself an "old fashioned" journalist who now, as a viewer, wants to see reporters and anchors follow a style similar to what he displayed during his professional career.
"When anchors are reporting the news, they should report the news and allow the viewers at home to decide what they think about issues,” Shaw said. "I don't want to hear an anchor's personal opinion about anything. Just report the news.”
