Dick Morris: Democrats 'Trap' GOP on Immigration
Political strategist Dick Morris suspects that the immigration bill defeated in the Senate on Thursday may have been a "Democratic trap.” "Did 15 Democrats vote to kill the immigration bill to assure its defeat and guarantee that the Latino vote would go Democrat in the 2008 election,” said Morris, co-author of the new bestselling book "Outrage: How Illegal Immigration, the United Nations, Congressional Ripoffs, Student Loan Overcharges, Tobacco Companies, Trade Protection, and Drug Companies Are Ripping Us Off . . . and What to Do About It." "Was it a set-up all along? Did the Dems lure Bush into a compromise knowing that the GOP base would go ballistic and inflict a high-profile defeat on the president sure to cripple his presidency and give Hispanics a well-publicized slap in the face courtesy of the GOP? "Only my appreciation of the lack of strategic intellect in the Democratic Party inhibits me from saying yes to all these questions. But I still wonder.”
Story Continues Below On Thursday Morris said the defeat of the immigration bill will boost the chances of a Democratic victory in 2008, giving probable Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton a strong advantage, because "Hispanic voters will undoubtedly blame the Republicans for the failure of the bill.”
