John McCain beat out Rudy Giuliani in a poll of likely Republican voters in early primary state South Carolina, the site of Tuesday’s second GOP presidential debate.
In the survey conducted by Ayres McHenry and Associates from May 5 through May 8, McCain got 25 percent of the votes to Giuliani’s 20 percent.
Surprisingly, two unannounced candidates – Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich – both received more votes than announced candidate Mitt Romney.

Thompson got 16 percent, Gingrich received 12 percent and Romney got 8 percent. No other candidate finished with more than two percent, according to the poll results reported by the Web site of Campaigns and Elections Magazine.
Giuliani had the highest favorable rating in the poll of 500 Republicans, 74 percent, followed by McCain at 66 percent and Gingrich at 63 percent.
