Newt Gingrich: 'Great Possibility' I’ll Run

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said there is a "great possibility" that he would join the race for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.

Previously Gingrich had said only that he was "thinking about" a run for president.

In an interview with Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America” on Monday, Sawyer asked:

"You said you'll make a decision at the end of the September. [Is it] more likely, less likely this morning?”

Gingrich answered: "I think right now, it is a great possibility.”

Gingrich was visiting "GMA" to talk about his new book, "Pearl Harbor: A Novel of December the 8th," which he co-wrote with William Forstchen.

But he took time to assess the field of declared presidential candidates and said he wasn't happy with the current choices.

He told Sawyer that the three Republican front-runners – Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney – "are just not viable conservative choices.”

He also said that the GOP nominee needs to be committed to "fundamental change” in Washington, and warned Republicans that Hillary Clinton has a "very good chance to win the presidency if she gains the Democratic nomination.”

Gingrich said earlier that he might join the presidential race if he believes the GOP candidates are not articulating a populist conservative philosophy.

But he could face a rocky road if he does decide to enter the race. The "Year of the Dark Horse” cover story in the June issue of NewsMax Magazine, soon to hit newsstands, reveals that when voters were asked which of eight declared and undeclared presidential candidates they would never vote for, Gingrich polled the highest at 53 percent.
