As deputy chief of staff, Michael Deaver was a key aide to actor-politician Ronald Reagan. Now Deaver is backing another actor-politician for the presidency – Fred Thompson.
Deaver describes the "Law & Order” star as someone who "could really make a difference. He is very popular in his party. He could change this whole thing and turn this primary system upside down.”
Britain’s Sunday Telegraph quoted Deaver as saying: "As Ronald Reagan used to say, after he stole a line from Al Jolson, ‘Stay tuned, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.’”
The political and acting careers of Thompson – a former U.S. Senator from Tennessee – have been closely entwined. As an actor he has played a white House chief of staff, a CIA boss, an FBI agent, and a senator. He plays President Ulysses S. Grant in the upcoming HBO movie "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.”

The New York Times noted: "When Hollywood directors need someone who can personify governmental power, they often turn to him.”
As for Republican front-runner Rudolph Giuliani, Deaver said: "His popularity may be a mile wide and an inch deep.”
Another Reagan aide, speechwriter Clark Judge, has also voiced support for Thompson, the Telegraph reported. He called him "a man of tremendous substance.”
He said Reagan "embodied the mission of the party – entrepreneurial growth, limited government and a strong national defense. Whoever can bring that mission into this age will be the nominee. And it may be Fred Thompson.”
A recent Internet poll sponsored by NewsMax.com revealed that Americans are overwhelmingly in favor of Fred Thompson running for president in 2008.
Our "Should Fred Thompson Run for President” poll of nearly 100,000 people also disclosed that Thompson would trounce all leading Republican candidates in a primary.
Thompson has not announced that he will run for the White House next year. But he has begun assembling the core of a campaign team in preparation for a possible run.
