Barack Obama has pulled to within 5 percentage points of Hillary Clinton in a poll released Wednesday – the day before the first debate of the 2008 Democratic primary season.
In the Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, Clinton – who led Obama by 12 points in the same poll a month ago – leads Obama by a margin of 36 percent to 31 percent, with John Edwards garnering 20 percent. The survey of more than 1,000 adults was conducted April 20-23.
Matt Bennett of the Third Way Foundation, a think tank for centrist Democrats, told Newsday that the poll results, coupled with Obama’s $25-plus million fundraising in the first quarter of this year, firmly establish him as "a very formidable top-tier candidate.”
A USA Today/Gallup poll taken 10 days ago also gave Clinton a 5-point lead, while a Rasmussen survey earlier this month had Obama and Clinton even.
