Presidential contender Sen. John McCain made a stop in Connecticut to touch base with Republican supporters and add to his campaign coffers.
U.S. Rep. Chris Shays, R-Conn., was among those attending the $2,300-a-head fundraiser at the Belle Haven Club Monday night in Greenwich. As the Arizona Republican arrived, he was greeted by a small group of anti-war protesters who shouted out and waved signs at the McCain motorcade. He waved back.
McCain has visited the area several during the past two congressional races to campaign for Shays' re-election. Shays returned the favor Monday night.
"They've been friends for a long time and have worked closely together on many substantive issues, including campaign finance reform," said Shays' campaign manager Michael Sohn.

Earlier in the day, McCain addressed about 50 supporters at a private home in Darien.
"We're certainly grateful for the level of support that the senator enjoys in Connecticut, his campaign spokesman Danny Diaz said. "It's a state that recognizes his strong stance on the war on terror and on spending restraint in the nation's capital.
McCain trails former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani in most public opinion polls in the race for the White House. The $13 million McCain raised in the in the first quarter was third among GOP hopefuls, behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who raised $21 million, and Giuliani with $14.7 million, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.
