Sen. Joe Lieberman Stands By 'Friend' Imus

Sen. Joe Lieberman said he will stand by his "friend” Don Imus and continue to appear on his radio talk show – if Imus manages to remain on the air following his derogatory comments about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team.

"Don Imus’ comments were deeply offensive,” the senator from Connecticut – who was re-elected as an independent in November – said in a statement Wednesday.

"He is right to apologize and strive to make amends. Because he is a friend and I know he is a better person than his remarks would suggest, I will continue to appear on his show. Don’s task now is to heal the wounds that he opened by his hurtful comments.”

Imus is a part-time resident of Westport, Conn.

Connecticut’s other senator, Democrat Chris Dodd, who is a candidate for president in 2008, said Tuesday he would wait to see how Imus acts in the future before deciding if he will appear on his show, the Connecticut Post reports.

Arizona Sen. John McCain has already said he would be willing to appear again as a guest on Imus’ show.
