Radio Talkers Denied 'Obamanation' Trademark

A Chicago talk radio host tried to trademark a phrase containing the word "Obamanation” and was turned down by a federal lawyer – who said the term was "disparaging” to presidential hopeful Barack Obama.

Cisco Cotto, who co-hosts a morning show on 560AM WIND with Big John Howell, explained on the station’s Web site: "My wife and I tried to trademark the phrase ‘It’s an Obamanation!’ so we could print it on shirts, hats, bumper stickers, and mugs. We support several charities in the Chicago area and are always looking for ways to make money.

"Our trademark application was denied because the federal lawyer thought the phrase was disparaging.”

The lawyer wrote that the application was refused "because the proposed mark consists of or comprises matter that may disparage or bring into contempt or disrepute Barack Obama.”
