Cheney: Hillary Won't Make Good President

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney on Wednesday said Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton would not make a good president -- because she is a Democrat.

The New York senator and former first lady is hoping to be the first American woman to become president, competing in a field of at least eight candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for 2008 election.

Cheney, asked in an interview on CNN whether Clinton would make a good president, replied, "No, I don't."

Why not? "Because she's a Democrat. I don't agree with her philosophically and from a policy standpoint."

Cheney, who has ruled out running for president in the race to replace President George W. Bush, said he did not think Clinton would win, but refused to speculate on who might be elected to the White House.

His comments followed an opinion piece by his daughter, Liz Cheney, in The Washington Post on Tuesday that accused Clinton of lacking backbone on Iraq.
