NRA Sounds Alarms on Gun Control

The National Rifle Association is launching a preemptive attack on anticipated Democratic attempts to tighten gun control. The weapon: an illustrated pamphlet titled "Freedom in Peril.”

A draft of the document, which was recently leaked to the Internet, begins: "Second Amendment freedom stands naked in the path of a marching axis of adversaries far darker and more dangerous than gun owners have ever known. Acting alone and in shadowy coalitions, these enemies of freedom are preparing for a profound and foreboding confrontation in which they will not make the mistakes of their predecessors. We’d better be ready.”

The opening essay, "The Coming Confrontation,” is signed by two NRA executives, Wayne LaPierre and Chris W. Cox. It reads in part:

"It’s inevitable that terrorists will infest America for generations to come. It’s also inevitable that an anti-gun president will occupy the White House, and anti-gun forces will control the U.S. House and Senate . . .

"When these two certainties intersect, America’s anti-gun agenda will emerge in full force masquerading as an anti-terrorist agenda. Unless we are well-financed to face that moment, the final disarmament of law-abiding Americans will occur beneath the shroud of anti-terrorism legislation.”

The pamphlet takes shots at a variety of people and organizations that the NRA views as anti-gun. Among them:

  • George Soros. "The Hungarian-born billionaire bankroller of a globalist jihad against firearm freedom, George Soros has been trying to revoke the Bill of Rights through his checkbook – to the tune of more than $100 million.

  • Hillary Clinton. "It’s hard to find a more consistently anti-Second Amendment figure whose political success could turn back a quarter-century of advancement of our rights.”

  • Sen. Dianne Feinstein. "Feinstein admitted that if it were up to her, guns would be banned and confiscated.”

  • Sen. John Kerry. "Kerry has voted at least 51 times against gun owners’ rights, making him the most anti-gun presidential candidate in U.S. history.”

  • Rep. Nancy Pelosi. "As the Democratic leader in the House, Pelosi represents a major threat to gun owners’ rights.”

  • The United Nations. "Eliminating civilian ownership of firearms worldwide is a front-burner mission of the United Nations,” which the pamphlet calls "The One-World Extremists.”

  • People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. "This eco-terrorism movement is so dangerous, the FBI has declared it America’s number one domestic terrorist threat.”

The pamphlet also chastises the media as "The Tragedy Chasers,” contains unflattering caricatures of Michael Moore, Katie Couric and Rosie O’Donnell, and laments the actions of authorities in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina:

"For the first time in American history, New Orleans and other government officials ordered law enforcement officers to go door to door to confiscate firearms from law-abiding citizens at gunpoint.”

Following claims from some that the leaked pamphlet was in fact a hoax, NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam confirmed to ABC News that it was authentic, but maintained that it was an unedited draft that was "stolen during production.”
