Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum is encouraged by President Bush’s troop surge plan for Iraq, saying it displays Bush’s resolve to defeat Islamo-fascism.
"I’m very, very encouraged by not just the speech, but [also] by the attention to Syria and Iran, particularly Iran,” Santorum said. "Iran has been funding Muqtada al-Sadr and his brigades in Iraq. This is a serious threat to our ability to complete this mission in Iraq.”
Santorum, appearing Wednesday on Fox News Channel’s "The Live Desk With Martha MacCallum,” said Bush recognizes that Iraq is a critical battle in the larger war on terrorism.
"Most people don’t realize that this war is not just in Iraq, but also in Iran,” Santorum said. "The commander in chief of the United States, in Lincolnesque fashion, must look at the information that the American public does not have and make decisions to protect this nation.”

Santorum suggested that Bush may find more fervent support for his efforts among those who live with terrorism everyday in the Middle East, rather than those who criticize the war effort in the United States.
"I’m very encouraged that the president is grappling well with the problem in that region, but he has not done as good a job with getting that message to the American public,” Santorum said. "He’s done a better job responding [to the threats] overseas than he has done here at home.”
