Poll: Katie Couric Falls Flat

An Internet poll sponsored by NewsMax.com reveals that a majority of Americans rate Katie Couric’s first-night performance as "CBS Evening News” anchor as "Bad” or "Just OK” — and only 12 percent think it was "Good.”

And in an ominous portent for CBS — which is hoping Couric can lift its nightly news out of the third-place spot among the networks — an even larger majority said they would watch Couric less rather than more in the future.

More than 114,000 people have taken part in NewsMax’s online poll about Couric as the new CBS anchor. NewsMax will provide the results to major media and share them with radio talk-show hosts across the country.

Here are the poll questions and results:

1) Did you watch Katie Couric’s first appearance on the CBS Evening News?

Yes: 67 percent

No: 33 percent

2) How would you rate Katie’s performance as CBS Evening News anchor?

Good: 12 percent

Bad: 29 percent

Just OK: 31 percent

I didn’t watch it: 28 percent

3) Do you believe Katie Couric is fair or biased as a journalist?

Fair: 13 percent

Biased: 87 percent

4) In the future, will you watch more or less of Katie Couric on the CBS News?

More: 9 percent

Less: 62 percent

No Change: 29 percent

5) Of the following, who would you prefer be CBS News anchor:

Katie Couric: 9 percent

Bill O’Reilly: 45 percent

Lou Dobbs: 18 percent

Bob Schieffer: 28 percent
