Residents of Los Angeles are gathering today to celebrate Independence Day – Mexican Independence Day, that is.
Thousands are expected to assemble in front of City Hall Friday evening, waving the Mexican green, white and red flag to mark the day and the official kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month in the city, home to the largest population of Mexicans outside Mexico.
Another celebration will take place in the San Fernando Valley, the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
The celebration commemorates priest Miguel Hidalgo Costilla’s 1810 call to the country’s poor to seek independence from Spain, which touched off a struggle that last more than a decade.
In Mexico, President Vincente Fox will mark the holiday in the town of Dolores Hidalgo, 170 north of Mexico City.

The celebration was moved there from the traditional location in the capital due to anticipated demonstrations from supporters of presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who have been camped out to protest the election results that gave the victory to Felipe Calderon.
