Katie Couric has lost nearly half of her audience since she debuted as the "CBS Evening News" anchor on Sept. 5.
About 14 million curious viewers tuned in to watch Couric's first night as TV's first solo female anchor of a nightly news program. But by the end of the week on Friday, Sept. 8 the number had plunged to 7.4 million.
Still, "CBS Evening News" was the top-rated newscast for the week, with an average of 10.2 million viewers the network's first weekly win in five years, according to the New York Post.
CBS officials shrugged off the ratings drop, saying long-term improvements in ratings are usually "glacial."
