Rev. Jerry Falwell Opposes Stem-Cell Research

The Reverend Jerry Falwell says he opposes stem cell research even though it shows great medical promise.

Falwell, the founder of Liberty University says he sympathizes with those whose conditions could possibly be helped by stem cell research.

The Lynchburg minister says any medical research must pass a three-part test: "Is it ethically correct? Is it biblically correct? Is it morally correct?"

Falwell says he opposes stem cell research for the same reason he opposes abortion - because he believes that life begins at conception.

The 73-year-old Falwell was in Kansas City, Missouri yesterday to give the keynote address at a convocation at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

After the speech, he commented on a measure that will appear on the November ballot in Missouri. The initiative would protect all stem cell research in the state if it is now allowed under federal law.
