Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., joined in celebration of the news of the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi by justly praising the U.S. military efforts in Iraq.
Appearing on Fox News Channel hours after the news broke of the U.S. air strike that felled the terrorist leader, McCain was effusive in praise of the meaning of this event.
"I think it is appropriate to mention that al-Zarqawi’s ultimate goal was the destruction of America and of the West,” McCain said. "It is a clear victory, in stark terms, of good versus evil . . . Great credit goes to our marvelous military. This is what our American military is all about.
McCain, a former U.S. Navy commander, said the killing of al-Zarqawi is a coup for U.S. Special Forces, and a timely reminder of all that is good and right about the U.S. military, given the negative major media frenzy surrounding alleged misdeeds by U.S. Marines in Haditha.

"I think it is a big step,” he said. "As the president said, we still have a long way to go. It’s long, it’s hard and it’s tough, but this has to be viewed as a success. We are going to have setbacks . . . but this is a day to be happy."
McCain continued: "Our military has been under assault. We understandably have a lot of focus on that [the probe of Iraqi civilian deaths in Haditha]. Now the American people are reminded of the magnificence and justifiable pride we feel about our military.”
