Bill Gates Plans Lavish Meal for China's Hu

When you’re the richest man on earth and the president of China is coming to your house for dinner, you definitely don’t serve chicken chow mein.

Instead, Microsoft chief Bill Gates and his wife Melinda are laying out a lavish feast for President Hu Jintao, his wife and members of the Chinese delegation accompanying Hu, at the Gates’ home in Medina, Wash., Tuesday night.

The menu, according to the Seattle Times: A first course of smoked guinea fowl salad with hazelnuts, spring radishes and Granny Smith apples.

For the entrée, three choices:

  • Fillet of beef with Walla Walla onions, local asparagus, celeriac puree and chervil glace.

  • Alaskan halibut and spot prawns with spring vegetables, fingerling potatoes and a smoked-tomato-infused olive oil.

  • A vegetarian option.

Dessert is a rhubarb brown butter almond cake.

The pricey wine list includes a chardonnay and a cabernet sauvignon, both from the Northwest.

About 100 people, including local business, political and community leaders, are on the guest list for the dinner, and Gov. Christine Gregoire is the official host.

The culinary master responsible for the meal is the Gates’ house chef – whose identity has not been revealed.
