Former Reagan administration Navy Secretary James Webb said today he hopes to challenge not only GOP Senator George Allen - but what he calls an "extreme" Republican Party that has strayed far from Reagan's ideal.
Webb said in a news conference in Richmond today that the Republican Party has "moved toward the extreme on social issues" in an attempt to keep a voter base.

Webb, a Republican-turned-Democrat, will campaign on national defense as a critic of indefinite U.S. occupation of Iraq and on the erosion of the American middle class.
Webb and fellow Democrat Harris Miller are competing in their party's June 13th primary to determine which will oppose Allen's bid for a second term.
Webb said Allen went to Washington six years ago and became a cog in Bush's party.
Allen was elected governor in 1993 and unseated Democratic Senator Chuck Robb in 2000.
Allen's political adviser, Dick Waddams, welcomed Webb to the race today, saying "We know that there will be a spirited Democratic primary with Harris Miller to determine which liberal is nominated."
