Gov. Bill Richardson said Tuesday he plans to extend an emergency declaration for the border area this summer to keep state money flowing to help with border security.
"It's operational now, but if I wanted to continue triggering funds then ... we've got to renew it in the summer and I intend to do that," Richardson said.
Last August, Richardson declared a state of emergency in counties along the border with Mexico. In doing so, the governor was able to provide state money for local governments and law enforcement to deal with border crime and problems related to illegal immigration.
Richardson's comments came as the U.S. Senate considers immigration legislation.
