GAO: Health-Care Data at Risk

A report from the General Accounting Office offers a sobering warning for millions of Americans. The medical and financial information of those benefiting from Medicare, Medicaid and other government programs may be vulnerable to cyber-thieves.

USA Today reports the GAO found government computer systems to have "significant weaknesses.”

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, had his own characterization for government computer security systems.

"Instead of firewalls to safeguard sensitive data, we have Swiss cheese,” he told the USA Today.

The report focuses on the Department of Health and Human Services, the executive department charged with resolving Medicare claims of more than $290 billion each year.

HHS officials defended the program in a written response. The agency claims that the investigation was not complete and did not reflect the progress it has made in improving security.
