Ratings Slide at Howard Stern's Old Station

Ratings are in free fall at Howard Stern's old station, Free FM 92.3, reports New York Post radio columnist John Mainelli.

"Preliminary and unofficial" ratings for January show that Stern's replacement, former Van Halen rocker David Lee Roth, has lost three-quarters of Stern's listeners.

When Stern moved to Sirrius satellite radio on January 3, his listenership average 277,000. But Stern fans apparently haven't warmed to Roth, who was able to keep just 63,000 of them tuning in regularly.

The numbers are based on unofficial monthly "extrapolations" from interim Arbitron quarterly ratings.

While industry observers say that no radio show should be judged by its first month's estimated ratings - the suits at 92.3's parent company, CBS, don't sound like happy campers.

According to the New York Post's Page Six, CBS honcho Les Moonves is weighing a $500 million lawsuit against Stern for breach of contract for allegedly failing to disclose details of his Sirrius deal before he left.
