Legendary commentator Paul Harvey’s days may be numbered at ABC Radio – and former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson is the leading contender to replace him.
Thompson met with ABC Radio executives late last year and the "Law & Order” star is the favorite to take over the top-rated 87-year-old broadcaster’s three daily "news and comment” programs, the New York Post reports.
Harvey is in the middle of a 10-year, $100 million contract, and is extremely valuable to ABC Radio.
Citadel Broadcasting Corp. has purchased the ABC Radio Networks and 22 ABC stations from the Walt Disney Co., and Harvey is responsible for generating nearly all of the networks’ $25 million in estimated annual earnings, according to a Bank of America analyst.

But Harvey appeared frail last November when he accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and his "vocal delivery doesn’t have the vigor and vinegar it once did,” according to the Post.
A spokesman for ABC Radio tried to downplay the Thompson-for-Harvey talk, saying: "We have spoken to Sen. Thompson, but we talk to talent all the time about many different roles.”
