Former Democratic Gov. Edmund "Pat" Brown dismissed his Republican challenger in the 1966 gubernatorial race as a Hollywood interloper who had no business trying to become California's chief executive.
"He's an actor," he said of Ronald Reagan. "You know who shot Abraham Lincoln don't you?"
On Monday, the 40th anniversary of Reagan's landslide gubernatorial election, the first step on his road to the White House, was celebrated at his presidential library. The attendee attracting the most attention was another actor-turned-politician, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Schwarzenegger avoided discussing the campaign, focusing instead on Reagan's legacy. He also praised Nancy Reagan, the 85-year-old former first lady, during the luncheon tribute.
"Forty years may have passed, Mrs. Reagan, but you are still the first lady in our hearts," Schwarzenegger said.

After a brief speech embracing Ronald Reagan's legacy, Schwarzenegger turned to Mrs. Reagan and said: "I have studied your husband. I promise you I will try to live up to his example."
Other attendees included former Republican Gov. Pete Wilson, billionaire oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens, Merv Griffin and a long list of Republican politicians.
The nation's former first lady, good friends with Maria Shriver and an occasional guest at the Schwarzenegger home, has endorsed the governor for re-election.
