Ed Gillespie Joins George Allen’s Team

The chances that Virginia Senator George Allen will be a candidate for the GOP presidential nomination in 2008 took a leap forward with the announcement that former GOP National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie is taking on the job of treasurer of Allen’s Political Action Committee (PAC).

According to Outside the Beltway, Allen lured Gillespie into taking on the key treasurer job several months ago when the then-treasurer resigned. While Gillespie was receptive, he was reluctant to make a commitment at the time because he was helping the White House get John Roberts' Supreme Court nomination through the Senate.

Once that job was finished and Gillespie returned to Quinn Gillespie & Associates - one of Washington, D.C.’s top public affairs firms, where he is a partner - he told Allen he’d be happy to pitch in a raise money for Allen’s PAC.

With Gillespie on board and passing the hat for Allen’s PAC, the Senator will be able to concentrate on raising money for his Senate re-election campaign.

Bringing Gillespie on board will allow Allen to keep his options open for 2008 while engaged in seeking re-election.

"I told him I wanted to do anything I could do to help him," Gillespie told Outside the Beltway. "He told me that he's not going to be able to focus on his PAC, so I said I would become its treasurer until the end of the cycle."

Recognized as a political powerhouse figure in Washington, Gillespie’s partnership in Quinn Gillespie Associates, a firm he founded with former Clinton White House veteran - Democrat Jack Quinn - helps him bring more than money raising ability to Allen’s PAC. Gillespie is recognized as an astute political guru in a firm highly respected for their expertise in the political arena.

On its Web site, Quinn Gillespie notes that the members of the firm "have been intimately involved in electing the last two presidents, and we bring this same campaign mentality to the work we do for all our clients ...

"The firm and its members are consistently recognized as among Washington's most influential and effective by publications like The Washington Post, Fortune, National Journal, Influence, Roll Call and The Hill. The firm’s principals also are frequent political commentators on television and radio.”

Having Gillespie in his corner shows that Sen. Allen will be a force to be reckoned with in the scramble for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination.
