William F. Buckley Elected to Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame

Conservative icon William F. Buckley received publishing’s top honor on Wednesday – induction into the Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame by the American Society of Magazine Editors.

The founder of the journal National Review told Mediaweek that being honored by the magazine industry would have to be in recognition of his editorial achievements, joking: "It couldn’t very well be for publishing because all I’ve done is lose money.”

Buckley, 80, retired from the magazine a year and a half ago after building it into the standard-bearer of the political right. He served as editor for 35 years, stepping down in 1990 to become editor at large.

Although "formally retired,” Buckley still writes a twice-weekly syndicated column, "On the Right,” and is finishing his 50th book, which he describes as a "contemporary novel – sort of a political romance, part thriller.”

Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker declared: "Whether you agree with him or not, a Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame without Bill Buckley would be like a Baseball Hall of Fame without Ted Williams.

"Bill combines two of the best traits an editor can have: intellectual seriousness and a mischievous gleam in his eye.”
