Jesus Accused of Being a Pothead

What are they smoking at High Times magazine?

An article in the drug-culture publication, supposedly based on a study of "scriptural texts,” claims that Jesus was a pothead!

The anointing oil used by Jesus and his disciples contained an ingredient called kaneh-bosem, which has been identified as cannabis extract, according to the article.

"Although most modern people choose to smoke or eat pot, when its active ingredients are transferred into an oil-based carrier, it can be absorbed through the skin,” the article states.

The incense used by Jesus in ceremonies also contained an extract of the marijuana plant, says the story’s author, Chris Bennett.

He quotes Carl Ruck, professor of classical mythology at Boston University, as saying: "Obviously the easy availability and long-established tradition of cannabis in early Judaism would inevitably have included it in the [Christian] mixtures.”

Bennett argues that the cannabis oil could have been responsible for the healing of eye and skin diseases referred to in the Gospels.

Bennett finally gets around to what could be called High Times’ ulterior motive in running the story:

"If cannabis was one of the main ingredients of the ancient anointing oil and receiving this oil is what made Jesus the Christ and his followers Christians, then persecuting those who use cannabis could be considered anti-Christ.”
