Democrat Diaz Endorses John Roberts
A democratic state senator from New York City has endorsed the confirmation of John Roberts as chief justice of the Supreme Court and is urging Sen. Hillary Clinton to do the same.
Sen. Ruben Diaz, whose district includes some of the poorer areas of the South Bronx, scheduled a press conference on the steps of Clinton’s Senate office building today.

Diaz, an ordained minister of the Church of God, joins 150 pastors from New York City to publicly call on Clinton to vote for Roberts’ confirmation.
Key republican Senators including George Allen (Va.) and James Inhofe (Okla.) are also addressing the conference.
In the 2002 election, Puerto Rico-born Diaz defeated his republican opponent by a 2-to-1 margin in a solidly democratic district.
But he took a distinctly conservative stance in 2003 when he filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Court claiming that the Harvey Milk school in New York – designated for gay, lesbian and transgender students – violates the laws against segregation.
