AFA Launches Katrina RV Campaign

American Family Association, based in Tupelo, Miss., has launched a unique operation to provide long-term relief through RV housing for homeless Katrina victims from Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.

Within days after the storm hit, Dick Lankford, vice president of development for AFA, organized the national RV-donation drive. Initially, Lankford contacted an RV dealer in Michigan who agreed to donate some campers, and an AFA-affiliate station in Fremont, Mich. issued the call for RVs which brought immediate responses from businesses, individuals and families as well as volunteers willing to drive the RVs to Mississippi.

"We are able to give people temporary homes of their own, and then they can resell the RV and have the money as equity for their permanent home,” Lankford said. "Not many are thinking long-term, and this is one way that we can provide for families on a long-term basis.”

Currently several campers are already on-site and in route to northeast Mississippi where the Tupelo Furniture Market has parking with utility hook-ups for 110 units, and according to Lankford the number of donated RVs continues to grow daily. AFA plans to place additional RVs in other cities housing storm refugees. The titles will be issued to AFA and then transferred to the families once they take over the RV as their new home.

"Families who want to go back and rebuild their homes can take the RV with them to live in during the building process, and families who want to relocate can travel in the RV to find a fresh start in a new place,” Lankford said. "Thousands of homeless families are living in shelters across the country, and the opportunity for them to own an RV provides long-term hope for getting back on their feet.”

American Family Association is a pro-family advocacy organization with over two million online supporters.
