Australian Prime Minister John Howard had better things to do than attend the official reception for Bill Clinton’s anti-poverty Global Initiative on Thursday – he had a private dinner with media mogul Rupert Murdoch instead.
With Manhattan traffic in gridlock due to this week’s U.N. summit, Howard didn’t have time to attend both functions, and chose his fellow Australian native over the former president, the publication The Age reports.
Howard has been critical of Australia’s media ownership laws. But he said beforehand that the subject would not be on the table when he dined with the News Corp. chief.
The launch of the Clinton Global Initiative, which aims to tackle poverty, climate change and other worldwide issues, had a guest list including British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and U.S. Secretary General Kofi Annan.
