New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is renovating and enlarging her Whitehaven mansion in Washington, D.C. so she can host even larger fundraisers - in the property Democrats already refer to as "the White-House-in-waiting."
She is gutting and remodeling the first floor of the home and adding a 1,000-square-foot room on the back, reports the New York Post.

The improvements, which are expected to cost $1 million, include a new raised terrace that will overlook a quarter-acre of perfectly manicured gardens when the work is finished in Feb. 2006.
"A lot of this is social one-upmanship," political scientist Larry Sabato told the Post. In Clinton's case, however, the improvements will help "guarantee that the RSVPs will pour in."
"I don't think you can overestimate the importance of Hillary Clinton and her network of contributors to the competitiveness of the Democratic Party," ex-DNC chairman Steven Grossman told the London Telegraph.
The neo-Georgian mansion "is already known by irreverent Democrats as the "White-House-in-Waiting" and "Fund-raising Central," the Telegraph said.
The Clintons purchased the property, for $2.8 million in January 2001. But with D.C. property values soaring in recent years, Whitehaven is now valued at $4.2 million.
