Pro-life Democrats have met with Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean to urge that the party be more tolerant of the views of anti-abortion Democrats.
Sixteen Democratic members of Congress pressed Dean to change party policy and establish a relationship with Democrats for Life of America, the national organization of party members who oppose abortion.

"The lawmakers say the Democratic Party is being viewed by voters as out of touch with American values because of its overwhelming pro-abortion position," reports LifeNews.com.
"The party's last two presidential candidates, Al Gore and John Kerry, both took positions in favor of abortion and polls by the Gallup organization show the abortion issue gave President Bush an advantage in each election."
Democrats for Life executive director Kristen Day told LifeNews.com that "Dean has continued to send a strong message that our party should no longer be the party of abortion on demand."
And Dean said a day after the meeting that "we need to welcome pro-life Democrats into this party."
Executive director Day hopes to convince the DNC to include a link to her organization on its Web site. But DNC officials have told lawmakers they want to wait until they've had a chance to review a legislative package from Democrats for Life seeking to reduce abortions 95 percent in 10 years.
"We've been working with the National Council on Adoption to come up with some good proposals that will better educate women on what entails in an adoption and what they can do if they are pregnant and they don't want to have an abortion but they don't feel that they have the means to raise a child," she told National Public Radio.
"There are millions of families out there who are willing to raise these children, and we just need to do more to support and help women and families facing these kind[s] of tough decisions."
