Santorum: Gluttonous Government is Robbing America of Its Families

Sen. Rick Santorum covers a lot of ground in his book "It Takes a Family," but the issue receiving perhaps the most attention is his stance on working parents.

Santorum thinks that at least one parent should be home with the kids when they are home, period.

Today on Fox News' "Dayside" program, host Juliet Huddy asked the senator to elaborate, pointing out that in many areas of the country, the cost of living is so high, parents feel they must both work just to survive financially.

Santorum said, "One of the things I point out in my book, and I'm really emphatic about it, is that the government and the culture has to be more nurturing to families and more supportive of families.

"A lot of the reason two parents work is ... to make ends meet. One of the reasons for that is the federal government, back in the 1950s, took, on average, from the average American family, 2 percent of their income in taxes. Today that same federal government takes 25 percent of their income in taxes.

"If you look at the difference between then and now, you see that huge difference, and one other difference. You have a working spouse now, in most American families; you didn't in the 1950s. On average, that working spouse earns 25 percent of what the primary worker in that household earns ... in other words, many spouses are working today simply to make up the difference of what the federal government is robbing them.

"We need to change that kind of policy - we need a tax policy that is directly more pro-family, that helps people make choices about what's best for them."

Huddy asked, "... So you're not saying it's selfish that women are out there in the workplace if they do have kids?"

"I'm saying ... they have to think of their other responsibilities, and that is if you have children, you have a responsibility to those children. And that means that you have to devote time and energy to them.

"Whether it's the mother or father or whatever arrangement they make - my opinion, they need to be home when the kids are home. Someone needs to be there to parent children. Someone needs to be there, someone needs to nurture, and someone needs to make sacrifice."

And what about Hillary Clinton and her notion of what it takes to raise children on America?

"The lowdown," he said, is that the title of his book is "certainly not a swipe at her book - she says a lot of things in her book that I agree with.

"It is a definite distinction between how we view the role of governments and families in society."

"I believe we solve problems best, and America is better, if we look first at the family, strengthen the family, and build up from there, as opposed to the top down ... the government raining down their ideology upon us."

He also said that his book is not really left vs. right, right vs. wrong, but something that details what freedom in America is about.

He said, "Families are being destroyed, communities are being destroyed" by the far-left and far-right ideology that says you have the freedom to do whatever you want, no matter what - that choice is the maximum virtue.

He explained that common sense from mainstream America that says you have freedom with responsibility to family, community and country, and that's "Liberty as it's properly understood."
