Santorum Takes On 'the Bigs'

In an obvious swipe at Sen. Hillary Clinton's claim that it takes a village to raise a child, her Senate colleague Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., insists what it takes instead is a family.

In answer to Sen. Clinton's best-selling book "It Takes a Village," Santorum has written "It Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Good," in which he levels a blast at what he calls "the Bigs" - "big news media, big entertainment, big universities and public schools, some big businesses and some big national labor unions, and of course, the biggest Big of all, the federal government."

"Liberals like Senator Clinton see 'the village' as society as a whole - influenced by, directed by, supported by, the supposed goodness of the Bigs in general and big government in particular," Santorum charges.

According to the Washington Post, Santorum said he originally intended to focus his book on on the poor, noting that it is lower-income families in America who "suffer the most" from policies set by political elites, most notably in education.

On that score he discusses the advantages he and his wife, Karen, believe homeschooling their six children have afforded them.

Homeschooling, he wrote, is not for everyone but "is one viable option among many that will open up as we eliminate the heavy hand of the village elders' top-down control of education and allow a thousand parent-nurtured flowers to bloom."

Needless to say, a leading organ of the Bigs, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, does not like Santorum's book and has issued a silly news release entitled "Santorum Book Confirms He Is Out of Step With Pennsylvania; Book Is Particularly Offensive to Women."

The Democrats made the charge because Santorum wrote, "Many women have told me, and surveys have shown, that they find it easier, more 'professionally' gratifying, and certainly more socially affirming, to work outside the home than to give up their careers to take care of their children."

He added, however, that "justice demands both fair workplace rules and proper respect for work in the home."
