Bill Clinton: Hillary is Republicans #1 Target

Ex-president Bill Clinton has begun actively campaigning for his wife's 2006 Senate reelection, warning supporters in a fundraising letter emailed yesterday that defeating Hillary has become the GOP's top priority.

"She has already been singled out as the Republicans' number one target for defeat next year," the ex-president claimed, saying he thinks he knows the reason why.

It's "her courage, her clarity, her ability to connect with people scare her opponents. When 2006 is over, they want Hillary out of the Senate."

The fundraising missive was emailed out the same day Clinton was golfing with his newfound friend, ex-President Bush, up at the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport. But that didn't stop Mr. Clinton from taking a shot at Bush's son.

"If you are worried about the direction of our country and want leaders like Hillary fighting to get us back on the right track, take a stand now," he urged, in a none-too-thinly veiled reference to his wife's 2008 presidential plans.

Before passing the hat, the ex-prez reminded that Hillary's campaign is a family affair, noting: "Chelsea and I are so proud of Hillary and what she is doing. We all thank you for your friendship and generosity."

"This is your chance to demonstrate how firmly you stand in Hillary's corner," Clinton concluded. "Make the most of it. Send as generous a donation as possible, and send it now."
