Klein Explains 'Rape' Story; Fox News Divided on Book

Edward Klein, the veteran editor who authored the new book "The Truth About Hillary" has vigorously defended his work – and says he does not allege that Bill Clinton "raped" his wife.

And, in a new round of shrill denunciations, Sen. Clinton's office blasted Klein in a desperate bid to quash interest in the book as it was officially released Tuesday.

"Let's set the record straight here," Klein told the National Review Online. "I don't make [the rape] claim in the book. I included the story about their 1979 trip to Bermuda because Hillary herself brings it up and spins it in her own book as an example of their supposedly romantic marriage."

The "rape" claim, which received wide currency on the Internet before the manuscript was released, comes from an anecdote Klein details about the Clintons' 1979 trip to Bermuda with friends.

Klein writes that a friend of the Clintons who was on the trip related that Clinton made a joking comment about having to return to his room to see his wife.

But the mangled anecdote, taken out of context, may have set the stage for the explosive fireworks aimed at Klein for writing this tell-all about the Democrats' front-runner for the 2008 nomination.

Already, the Fox Network's Bill O'Reilly has used his program to fire broadsides at Klein and his book. On Monday night O'Reilly led his program with a discussion of the book and said that Klein remains banned from his show.

"I didn't put on Kitty Kelly to discuss her book, which was full of personal attacks on the Bush family," O'Reilly said. "Many of us are very tired of personal attacks and the people who make money using them."

The O'Reilly position appears at odds with Sean Hannity, the network's conservative host, who is scheduled to have Klein on during his "Hannity & Colmes" program Tuesday night.

But first Klein is set to debut his explosive book in an exclusive radio interview Tuesday with Hannity.

Since last year, the courageous ABC syndicated host has pledged that stopping Hillary Clinton from becoming president of the United States would be a major focus of his program.

The Clinton camp, meanwhile, is pulling out all the stops to discredit Klein and anyone who covers his book.

"We don't comment on works of fiction, let alone a book full of blatant and vicious fabrications contrived by someone who writes trash for cash," Hillary spokeswoman Philippe Reines told the Associated Press.

Jim Kennedy, a spokesman for former President Clinton, blasted Klein's tome as "trash."

The DrudgeReport stated that Hillary is considering legal action against Klein, and a source close to her camp described the book's allegations as "the right wing on crack."

Despite the spin, Klein has solid liberal media credentials, having served in senior editorial positions at the New York Times, Newsweek and Vanity Fair.
