Pirro Tops List to Challenge Hillary

New York State Republican leaders are hoping that Westchester County District Attorney Jeanine Pirro tosses her hat into the ring against Hillary Clinton next year.

As NewsMax was first to report, Pirro announced last month that she would seek statewide office in 2006, but didn't indicate which one.

However, during a press conference afterward Pirro seemed to take a shot at Clinton's outsider status.

"The good news is I won't have to listen [referring to Hillary's "listening tour" before her run for Senate in 2000]," she told reporters. "I'm from this state. I'm from upstate New York, and I've lived down here, and I've been in the trenches for the past 29 years."

GOP leaders strongly prefer Pirro over other potential Hillary challengers, such as Ed Cox, the late President Nixon's son-in-law.

They'd also like to see Rick Lazio, the ex-Long Island congressman who challenged Mrs. Clinton in 2000, run for New York state attorney general.

"There is no question that Jeanine Pirro and Rick Lazio are two names that energize our base very well," state GOP Chairman Steve Minarik told the New York Daily News.

The rest of the GOP dream ticket would include millionaire businessman Tom Golisano in the governor's slot and running former Assembly Minority Leader John Faso for comptroller.
