Buchanan: Felt's Actions Criminal

Appearing on MSNBC's Keith Olbermann Show Pat Buchanan said he always suspected that Mark Felt was Deep Throat.

"I didn’t know for certain, but I put Mark Felt at the top of my list for years and I’ve told people privately that," the conservative commentator said.

"I haven’t used the name publicly for the simple reason that I don’t think Deep Throat is an honorable man and I felt it would be a slur on him if I said it was he and it turned out not to be he.”

For years some have suggsted Buchanan or another Nixon insider might have been Deep Throat.

"You’ve got all those names of Nixon people – it never could have been any of them in my judgment for the simple reason that all those individuals owed their careers and everything else to Richard Nixon," Buchanan said, adding, "They had no motive to go to the Washington Post and give the Washington Post – Nixon’s enemy – information to damage a president who had defended them all and benefited them all.”

Buchanan told Olbermann that he thought that Felt had previously denied that he was Deep Throat he did so because he was ashamed of what he had done.

Mark Felt, he said "did at times feel ashamed of what he did.

"It is not honorable in the middle of an investigation to grab material that you’ve dredged up which is supposed to go to the prosecutors who decide who to indict and slip it over to the Washington Post to damage a president in the middle of a campaign.

"His motive, as Bob Woodward indicated, was that Mark Felt was passed over when Hoover died and Nixon gave the eulogy and then put L. Patrick Gray, who was very close to the president and was assistant attorney general, in charge of the FBI.

"And the FBI fellows who were senior fellows and had served under Hoover, some of them since the 20s, were very bitter. And his motivation I think was not good, his deeds were dishonorable if not criminal and I don’t know what he thought he was doing for his country. My sense is that he is probably ashamed of what he did.”

Asked by Olbermann if he believed that Woodward and Bernstein "fudged this, that they must have assigned information they got elsewhere to Felt – stuff that he couldn’t have known" - Buchanan agreed.

"In the fall of 1972 I was called around 6 in the morning by Halderman and told to get over to the White House, that we had a serious problem.

"In the Washington Post was a story of a dirty tricks operation run by Donald Segretti. I knew we had an operation of some kind out there – a Dick Tuck [famed Democrat dirty trickster] operation.

"I didn’t know it was big like that and I didn’t know Segretti’s name. And nobody in the White House except for Dwight Chapin, [Segretti’s college roommate] or maybe Halderman knew Segretti’s name. Now who had the information – Segretti’s name - and who had the motivation to give it to the Washington Post?

"That’s why down the road I said to myself the only people who could have the information besides the insiders are the folks at the FBI and nobody in the White House had the motive.

"So it had to be over at the FBI and it’s not Gray – so who is it? Who is the number two guy over there who had the reputation for leaking? Mark Felt.”
