Nancy Reagan Surprised by White House Bunker

Former first lady Nancy Reagan was surprised last week to learn the White House had a secure bunker when Secret Service agents took her there as an unidentified aircraft approached the building.

Liz Smith reports in Friday's New York Post that Mrs. Reagan was sitting in the White House watching a video of Diane Sawyer interviewing her when the Secret Service rushed into the room and ordered: "You must come with us!"

At first Mrs. Reagan was reluctant to leave, telling the agents that she was watching something she really wanted to see.

Because of the urgency of the situation, however, one of the men picked her up by the arm and whisked her away.

When she got to the secure bunker, Mrs. Reagan was greeted by Laura Bush, who had just arrived herself.

The former first lady told Smith that she had no idea that the security bunker even existed at the time she and Ronald Reagan lived in the White House.

After her adventure in Washington, Mrs. Reagan traveled to New York City, where she was feted by celebs and old chums alike.

Even Dan Rather "had come to pay homage" during lunch at the Four Seasons earlier this week, to thank her for all she has done for her country.

Others at the Four Seasons nosh included Casey Ribicoff, Gloria Vanderbilt, Princess Firyal of Jordan, Irith Landeau, Mica Ertegun, Pat Buckley, Annette de la Renta and Katie Couric.
