Nancy Reagan: Pope, Ronnie Shared Interests

Former first lady Nancy Reagan told CNN's Larry King that her late husband "had so many things in common" with Pope John Paul II, echoing the thoughts of many.

The men surged to power within years of each other, and "when Ronnie was shot in '81, the pope was shot in '81," she recalled. "When Ronnie died in June ... the pope [looked] like he was going to die. ... It's amazing how their lives crossed.

"And then, you know, there was a whole communist thing," Nancy said, referring to both men's dedication to ending a worldwide plague of Soviet-fostered totalitarianism. "They were - the two of them, the pope and Ronnie - very involved with defeating communism."

"I met with him seven times, and twice alone," Nancy recalled, "which was a really wonderful, wonderful experience."
