Former president Bill Clinton indulged in a bit of gay bashing on Monday, attacking one of his wife's critics as a "self-loathing" homosexual.
Reacting to reports that GOP strategist Arthur J. Finkelstein, was in the midst of setting up a political action committee to counter Hillary's 2006 reelection bid, the ex-president noted that Finkelstein had recently married his gay partner in a Massachusetts civil ceremony.

"Either this guy believes his party is not serious [about opposing gay marriage] and he's totally Machiavellian," Clinton said, according to Tuesday's New York Times. Or he "may be blinded by self-loathing."
The comment drew a sharp reaction from Finkelstein's friends.
"It's really beneath a former president to comment on someone's personal life like that," said Michael McKeon, a Republican strategist and former aide to Gov. George Pataki.
"After everything he has been through in his own life, you'd think he'd know better," McKeon added.
The Daily News noted Clinton's insensitive remark "hearkened back to a similar remark made by John Kerry in an Oct. 13, 2004, presidential debate."
Asked if homosexuality was a genetic trait or a matter of choice, Kerry said, "I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as."
The callous remark was said to be a turning point in public perceptions of Kerry, who went on to lose decisively to Bush.
