"The father seems to be having, I hate to say this, a good time. I don't know why, maybe it's the focus, maybe he's giddy with sadness of the tragedy that has been going on for so long."

Matthews also said that a nurse who cared for Schiavo and who claimed that she could eat normally was making it up.

"We have a nurse who says that she fed her ice cream, milkshakes, and puddings," the TV host told Imus.

"And we know from the doctors that she's incapable of eating anything like that stuff, given the fact that they have to feed her through tubes. ... We're learning how history gets written, and there's a lot of people that just don't tell the truth."

Nurse Carla Sauer Iyer, whose sworn affidavit was rejected by Schiavo case Judge George Greer, told CNN last week:

"[Terri] was eating. She was eating thickened liquids such as puddings, jellos, milkshakes. She was taking nutrition from a baby bottle."

Iyer said she made notes of the progress on Schiavo's medical chart, but then Michael Schiavo would discard those records.

Iyer's claim is corroborated by Heidi Law, another nurse who cared separately for Schiavo, who filed a sworn affidavit in the case stating:

"On three or four occasions I personally fed Terri small mouthfuls of Jello, which she was able to swallow and enjoyed immensely. I did not do it more often only because I was so afraid of being caught by Michael."
