Poll: Hillary Leads Giuliani in Senate Match-up

For the first time since the 9/11 attacks, Sen. Hillary Clinton leads former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in a theoretical match-up for her Senate seat, a poll released Monday shows.

The Siena College survey found that Clinton would defeat Giuliani by a margin of 52 percent to 43 percent, a dramatic improvement for the top Democrat.

A Quinnipiac University survey last year had Giuliani and Clinton neck and neck. A poll taken in 2003, when Giuliani was still chiefly remembered as "America's mayor" for his performance on 9/11, had Clinton trailing by a statewide margin of 17 points.

Excluding New York City, Guiliani led Clinton by 30 points in the same poll.

The former mayor said last year that he would make up his mind about challenging Clinton after the November 2004 election.

But he's been mum on the race ever since, and is believed to have his eye instead on a White House bid in 2008.
