Did Ted Kennedy just come out in favor of torture?
That's what viewers of the New England Cable News network were asking themselves earlier this week, after the Bush-bashing Democrat said in an interview that torture is "an American value."
Story Continues Below
WRKO Boston radio talker Howie Carr alerted NewsMax to Kennedy's latest verbal gaffe, which transpired as the blooper-prone Democrat explained how his colleagues would handle the confirmation of attorney general nominee Alberto Gonzales:
"I think there will be a vote on Mr. Gonzales," Kennedy explained. "I think the principal kind of issue is - ah - torture is an American value."
Apparently oblivious to the fact that he'd just endorsed a practice his party claims to deplore, Kennedy blathered on:
"Americans don't welcome torture. And we have read about Abu Ghraib, we've read about what's happened in Guantanamo. The CIA, the FBI, the Red Cross, the DIA, the Defense Intelligence [Agency] - all have remarked about the torture that's taken place at Guantanamo, Iraq and Afghanistan."

After all that, we're not exactly sure where Kennedy stands on torture. But perhaps his good friend, Sen. 'Osama' Obama, can clear up the confusion.
