He is perhaps best-known for his 1980 TV series "Free to Choose,” in which he explained basic economics and strongly criticized the destructive effects of taxes and regulation. The series has been seen by millions of people in dozens of countries, including Russia.
Dr. Friedman served as an economic adviser to Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. In 1976, Dr. Friedman was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics. He currently is devoting his efforts to building a national movement for school vouchers and choice in education.
At the star-studded Beverly Hills dinner, Dr. Friedman focused on the issue of reforming America’s long-suffering schools. Dr. Friedman said the current public school system is an outdated, socialist system that has failed millions of children and is getting worse.
Dr. Friedman’s solution: To allow parents everywhere to choose which schools to send their children to – public, private or religious – by issuing them vouchers which they spend where they choose. Ten years after its inception, Dr. Friedman’s school choice program is advancing nationwide, district by district. Over 500,000 school children now have choose in education, thanks largely to his foundation’s efforts.
"Eventually,” said Dr. Friedman, "one entire state will adopt school choice, and then it will spread everywhere.”
