Gen. Peter Pace: Army Needs Spy Program

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Peter Pace, is warning that the brouhaha over the Bush's adminstration's terrorist surveillance program could end up hurting the military's ability to fight the war on terror.

"We need to make sure that we as a nation avail ourselves of the opportunities to get the proper intelligence and take action," Gen. Pace told "Fox News Sunday."

Pace said that while he couldn't credit any one particular program with obtaining the key intelligence on which the military depends, he explained: "The totality of the intelligence that we have gotten through many means has enormously impacted our ability to track and find those who wish us ill."

Acknowledging that it's "up to our government to determine what we will and will not allow ourselves to do," Pace declared, "So I will not take a military uniform and pronounce a policy."

But he added, "I will tell you that, as much intelligence as we can get, we use. And it's important we do that respectful of the Constitution."
